The Importance Of Playtime For Dogs

When we think of playtime in our lives, we see this period as a time when we relax and rejuvenate. However, for many people, playtime is perceived as a non-essential activity that is slotted in as and when you can find the time for it. However, this could not be further from the truth. Just as playtime is important for humans, it is equally important for pets too. However, what does good playtime look like for our dogs? Read on to find out how to efficiently engage your pet in playtime and what the benefits of playtime for dogs are.

How To Engage in Playtime With Your Pet?

Playtime for humans and dogs is vastly different. If you’re at a loss for what to do during playtime, here are some ideas for you:

  • Hide and seek: Get a treat your dog loves and hide somewhere. After that, call your dog and wait for them to find you. Praise them, give them the treat, and repeat! After a prolonged period of training your dog may be able to find hidden objects for you.
  • Tug of war: Tug of war is the type of game that most dogs enjoy during playtime. However, establish ground rules such as no aggressive growling or biting. If you notice your dog’s behavior getting out of hand, immediately stop the game. Rules are important, even during playtime.
  • Fetch: Get a fun squeaky toy or ball, toss the toy, and let your dog fetch! For some dogs, fetching comes less naturally to them which is why you might need to train them with treats and by using a more exciting toy. For others, an old stick might suffice.
  • Chase: Chase is a playtime activity that will work up a sweat for the owners too. It’s self-explanatory, just be sure that you have loads of stamina!

Play Provides Physical Exercise

Play is a good way for your dog to get their daily exercise needs in. Dogs need physical exercise every single day and if you’re unable to meet those needs, they can start developing disturbing behavioral traits. They get destructive and might chew on your beloved items, so playtime is important to curb such behaviors.

Play Helps to Foster Closer Bonds with Your Pet

Dogs love playtime so if you’re actively engaging them in play, this can make both of you closer too! It is a great way to spend quality time together and foster meaningful emotional connections with them. Playfulness is a trait that both dogs and humans share so it makes perfect sense that playing together can be what brings the two closer.

Play Allows Your Pets to Be Mentally Stimulated

Aside from physical exercise, play is important because it provides mental exercise! You may think of physical games as the best ones for playtime but incorporating mental games can also be a great way for your dog to exercise another part of their body. These games enrich your dog’s life because they are out of the ordinary for them.  This is another great way to alleviate their problem and prevent behavioral issues from developing.
